Turning Your Expertise and Creativity into Cash: It’s a Wrap
Well, you’ve made it through all 10 sessions of this course! There are a multitude of reactions that you might have – and here are some of the most common:
- I want to write for magazines even more than I did before! If that’s how you feel, then it’s important to just keep going: keep learning about the craft – through taking other courses; by attending writer’s conferences online or in person; by networking with other magazine writers; and, of course, by writing as many quality query letters as you can and submitting them to relevant magazines – and then writing stellar articles that leave editors wanting another. Remember that every successful magazine writer today was once trying to sell his or her first article.
- I still want to write for magazines, but this course didn’t answer all my questions and/or this approach didn’t work for me. The goal of this course is to either get you started in magazine writing or to help you get to the next level. As a magazine writer, you’re basically becoming a professional question asker and committing to lifelong learning! And, if this course doesn’t present the right approach for you, that’s okay, too. Just like Thomas Edison, you’ve found a way that doesn’t work for you, which will help to bring you one step closer to finding the method that does. Writing is NOT a one-size-fits-all profession.
- I realize that I don’t want to write for magazines, after all. Lots of writers find their niche in newspaper reporting, book writing, copywriting, search engine optimization (SEO) copywriting, technical writing, fiction writing, grant writing, screenwriting, playwriting, songwriting, public relations writing – and all kinds of other types of writing. Or maybe editing is more your thing – or proofreading. And, know that you don’t need to limit yourself to just one of these specialties; many writers incorporate several of them into their professional offerings. Explore your options and find what works for you.
No matter what road you choose, I wish you success. If you have any questions about this course or suggestions to make it better, please email Kelly Boyer Sagert at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you!
