(Quest Description From Valerie Bordeau)
Working from home does have its advantages: frequent breaks, choice of music to write to, your favorite foods nearby readily available, and little daycare costs. You are able to work when and where you want. However, having the ability to set your own schedule can be a major disadvantage as well.
Well-meaning friends and family members sometimes have different ideas than you on what freedom of schedule actually means. Because you work at home, they may assume you have more free time to talk or go out on social activities. Your significant other may assign you a list of tasks to complete because you are at home and he or she is restrained from getting them done by a typical 9-5 type job. Kids are notorious for constant demands and can wreak havoc when it comes to calls with clients.
How on Earth are you supposed to get anything done? (sigh)
I’d like to tell you that if you followed everything in this quest, all your distractions will magically go away. The truth is, you’ll be working at this balancing act for the rest of your career. But by following these tips, you’ll be well on your way towards taking charge of the chaos.
Start by downloading the free accompanying KOP Quest Handout Balancing Work & Family. Print a copy so you’ll have a handy reference when distractions arise. Jot down any notes or ideas that come to you and answer the questions as you watch the following videos.
